My sister and I are now the caregivers for our Dad who is 67yrs old and a 10 year Parkinsons patient. Our Mom passed away recently. We have noticed with our new role as caregivers some inappropriate social behavior (sexual in nature). Could this be related to parkinsons and/or the medications? Would it be advisable to add a prescription drug to alter this behavior? Concerned Caregivers

This is very important to discuss both with the internal medicine doctor and the neurologist. This could be one of several options including progression of PD, dementia, medications, infection, other, or a combination. It is important to address this and identify the underlying cause prior to selecting treatment._________________Michael S. Okun, M.D.

Dear Doctor.
After I read the article sexual side effect I worry that there is possibility of sexual dysfunction/ hpersexuality/compulsive sexual behaviour on the progression of PD, medications or a combination.
How to address and identify the cause?
Is it the time to increase the drug as it's wearing off? Kindly brief. Thanks TEO KIM HOE

Dear Dr. Okun,
I refer to the article of sexual side effect.
Is it the sideeffect of the Dopamine Agonist Thereapy which aims to help increase the supply of dopamine to the brain - has been linked to extreme behaviour i.e the arrival of sexual disorders - namely a marked increase in libido and sexual behaviour as a result?
Is it the dopamine agonist is thought to be responsible for distinct changes in sexual/mental behaviour? Is it the dopamine agonist or chemical dopamine thereapy reduce the symptom of PD may be eroding to mental restraint from sexual dysfunction/ gambling in PD?
I am worried for the negative changes of the chemical dopamine on PD behaviour? Kindly brief me what to address this and identify the cause and the treatment? Thanks TEO KIM HOE

Most PD patients will experience erectile dysfunction--mostly from different factors: old age, vascular disease, diabetes, not feeling good because of PD, depression, faitigue, deconditioning, off state, etc.
Sometimes, the opposite is true and one experiences hypersexuality.
Most PD drugs have been implicated, but mostly dopamine agonists like ropinirole or pramipexole.
If this happens, then the dopamine agonist is first taken off.
If this does not work, the other meds are taken off. The last to be taken off is sinemet since it is the best drug. Yours,_________________Hubert H. Fernandez
